249. Portion of a large ornamented pot. including rim. Max. ext. diam.
of rim 7.l26 in. max.ext. diam. of body 11.94 in.. max. ext. diam.of base
6.88 in. max. height 13.88 in.
Ware hard-baked, heavy ; thickness varies from 0.25 in. to 0.5 in. Paste
brownish-grey,, mixed with fine grit and occasional fragments of stone
(largest pieces measure 0.25 in.
in diam.). Ext. surface black with reddish patches, fairly smooth, vertical
tool-marks on body, horizontal tool-marks around rim. Int. surface grey
to black, tool-marked. Fractured edge shows band marks caused when the
pot was being built up, also the clay welding of band joints. Ornamented
with an elaborate scroll design very similar to that on P238, but this
pot was very much larger and found in the Eastern Village in 1935 (Mound
XVB. E. village).
