Detailed description of the Pottery

P 115. Ornamented horizontal lug, 2.25 in. in width,
and 0.5 in. in depth along the edge.
Ware hard-baked, strong and heavy ; thickness varies from 0.38 in. to
0.5 in. Paste reddish-brown, mixed with large quantity of fine pounded
quartz and some pieces of stone, the largest being 0.25 in. in diam. Ext.
surface brown to black, smooth. Int. surface reddish-brown, uneven, gritty
to the touch.
Ornamented with band of cross-hatching along the edge.; perforation circular,
slightly counter-sunk, 0.2S in. in diam.
Found in Mound XXXII, on the second floor. 7 ft. S, of the c.p., 1930.

P 116. Large fragment of an ornamented globular-shaped pot. Type
VIII.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 5.l9 in. ; max. ext. diam. of body 8.88 in. rim
straight, vertical 0.75in. in depth ; Int. surface of rim convex ; lip
beaded and grooved.
Ware light weight ; average thickness 0.25 in. Paste brownish-grey colour.
Ext. surface smooth, soapy to the touch, considerably pitted with small
holes. Int, surface black.
Ornamented below the rim with a band of large circles arranged horizontally,
containing three small circles in line, The body is ornamented with vertical
bands of large circles (also containing three small circles in line) placed
parallel and separating rectangular spaces ; these are divided by diagonal
lines into four triangles, some of which are shaded with hatching, while
others are left plain. The upper band of large circles is bordered below
by a narrow band containing a row of small circles.
The design is not deeply incised, and the pottery is probably weathered.

P 117. Part of a bowl with ornamented side and base.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 6.19 in, ; max. ext. diam. of body 7.l26 in. diam.
of base 4.25 in, max. height 4.5 in.
Ware heavy, hard-baked ; thickness varies from 0.25 in. to 0.38 if). Paste
dark grey colour, mixed with fine stone, quartz sand and calcite grit.
Ext. surface light brown to black, smooth where not weathered. Int. surface
black, fairly even but gritty to the touch.
Rim nearly vertical 0.75 in. in depth, lip round with girth groove on
inner surface. Body ornamented with a lozenge design shaded with cross-hatching,
bordered above and below by two girth grooves, with space between shaded
diagonally. Base ornamented with reversed and overlapping semicirdes ;
the spaces between the curved lines are shaded diagonally. The whole pattern
is enclosed by two girth grooves near the margin shaded diagonally.

P 119. Rough cooking-pot (restored), with two plain lugs placed
vertically the horizontal perforations are slightly countersunk and 3
in, below the lip.
Max. ext. diam. of lip 5.25 in. ; max. ext, diam, of body 6.5 in, max.
ext. diam. ot. body including lugs 8 in. ; max. height 7.62 in. ; average
diam. of base 4 in.
Ware varies from dark grey to black ; average thickness 0.38 in. Paste
coarse-grained, mixed with small stones and grit. Ext. surface varies
from buff to black, uneven, no tool-marks. Int. surface dark brown to
black, rough and uneven.
Found in Mound XXXII, in the black earth under N.E. margin of the clay
floor, 18 ft. N.E. of
the c.p., 1930.
