Detailed description of the Pottery
p.29
P 40. Part of the base of a pot perforated with three circular
holes averaging 0.l55 in. in diam., and arranged in a triangle the sides
of which measure l.5 in. The holes are near the centre of the base and
were made after the pot was baked. There is also a fourth depression which
does not penetrate the entire thickness of the ware on the ext. surface
0.63 in. in diam.; max. diam. of base 3.58 in.
Ware hard-baked strong and very heavy ; average thickness 0.5 in. Paste
brownish-grey mixed with large quantity of calcite. Ext. surface dark
grey and smooth. Int. surface dark brownish-grey, rough and gritty to
the touch.
Found in Mound IX, in the black earth, 35 ft. S. of the c.p., 1914.

P 41. The upper part and rim of a large ornamented pot.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 7.l9 in. ; max. ext. diam. of body 8.5 in.
Ware hard-baked and strong ; thickness varies from 0.l9 in. to 0.31 in.
Paste grey, mixed with quantity of fine grit. Ext. surface varies from
greyish-buff to black, smooth, burnished. Int. surface black, fairly smooth
but uneven ; some parts are coated with charred food.
Lip beaded, rim nearly vertical 0.88 in. in depth ; shoulder ornamented
with a band 0.75 in. in depth shaded with cross-hatchings, bordered above
and below by one girth groove. Upper part of body ornamented with band
of triangles 1.25 in. in depth. The lower triangles are shaded with cross-hatching
; the upper are left plain except that each space is occupied either by
one or three circular depressions arranged alternately ; these appear
on the inner surface as circular bulges.
Found in Mound IX, in the black earth, 26.5 ft. S.W. of the c.p., 1914.

rim was found in Mound VII, 1911.

P 43. Part of an ornamented base.
Max. ext. diam. of base (approx.) 3.75 in.
Ware hard-baked, strong and heavy ; average thickness 0.25 in. Paste dark
grey, nearly black,
mixed with large quantity of calcite grains. Ext. surface varies from
light brown to dark grey, smooth and even. Int. surface dark grey, flecked
with whitish grains.
Ornamented with doubleAmed reversed semicirdes, which cross and make a
central oval and a triangular-shaped space on either side. The spaces
are shaded with diagonal lines.
Found in Mound IX, in the black earth, 24 ft. S. W. of the c.p., 1914.

P 44. Shallow unornamented bowl with flat base. Type
XXXV.
The upper surface of the rim is flat or slightly concave, and has a broad
shallow girth groove
on the inner surface.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 7.88 in. ; max. ext. diam. of body 7.44 in, max.
diam. of base 3.25 in. average height 3.38 in.
Ware light-weight, fragile, badly baked ; average thickness 0.38 in. Paste
dark grey mixed with grit and probably pieces of limestone. Ext. surface
black to light red, uneven, burnished ; pitted with small holes, some
of which contain fragments of lime. Int. surface varies from black to
grey, fairly smooth ; burnished near the rim.
Found in Mound IX, in the black earth on the second floor, 1914.

P 46. Rough, thick, pigmy vessel.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 1.88 in. ; max height 2 in. ; max. depth of interior
l.38 in.
Ware hard-baked, strong, very heavy; thickness of side and base varies
from 0.38 in. to 0.62 in. Paste reddish-grey, mixed with large quantity
of quartz sand. Ext. surface varies from red to grey, rough, fissured,
uneven and gritty to the touch. Int. surface red to dark grey, uneven,
smooth.
Found in Mound IX, on clay floor, 18 ft. S. of the c.p., 1914.
