P13. The knob of a pot cover ; max. ext. diam. l.69
in.
Ware fragile, heavy and badly-baked. Paste grey colour, coarse-grained,
mixed with grit. Ext. surface black, smooth, but uneven. Ornamented on
upper surface with a diamond-shaped design, divided by cross-lines enclosed
by a circular groove near the margin.
Found in Mound VII, in the black earth under the clay, 20 ft. SE. of the
c.p., 1911. Figured in Plate VIL
P14. Large nearly straight-sided pot, plain with the exception
of one girth groove below the rim. Type XXXIII.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 7.5 in. ; max. ext. diam. of base 6 in. max. height
5.25 in.
Ware heavy, hard-baked thickness varies from 0.25in. to 0.44 in. Paste
dark grey, mixed with fine quartz and stone grit. Ext. surface black,
smooth and burnished. Int. surface black, fairly smooth.
Found in Mound VIII, on second floor, 14.25ft. N. of the c.p., 1911. Figured
in Plates XVII and XIX.
P15. Fragment of large ornamented pot with everted rim.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 7.38 in. ; thickness of ware varies from 0.31 in.
to 0.5 in.
Ext. surface dark grey, smooth, soapy to the touch ; much pitted. Int.
surface black and burnished. Ornamented at base of rim with a triangular
design consisting of broad grooves bordered on either side with lines
of round punctured holes arranged from 0.19 in. to 0.3 1 in. apart from
centre to centre. The ornament is somewhat similar in character to pottery
found by Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Cunnington on an Early Iron Age A inhabited
site at All Cannings Cross Farm, Wilts., 1911.

P16. About one-half of an ornamented pot cover with knob, and with
a projecting flange near the edge of the lower surface.
Max. ext. diam. 6~88 in. ; max. ext. diam. of flange 5.19 in. mt. diam.
of flange 4.62 in. ; flange is 0.5 in. in depth, and placed 0.69 in. in
from the margin. The outer surface is vertical, inner surface concave,
and the edge rounded.
Ware reddish-grey colour, hard-baked ; thickness varies from 0.25 in.
to .05 in. Paste reddish- grey, heavy, mixed with quantity of coarse and
fine grit. Upper surface dark grey, nearly black in places, slightly convex,
nearly flat near the margin. Smooth where not weathered. Lower surface
reddish-brown colour, fairly smooth. Ornamented with four grooves round
the base of the knob, the spaces between the three inner grooves being
shaded with oblique lines. Near the margin of the cover it is ornamented
with two grooves. The space between these two sets of grooves is occupied
by a pattern consisting of five groups of triple-lined semicirdes enclosing
two smaller semicirdes, shacied and bordered by two grooves. The edge
of the cover is ornamented with cross-hatched lines. The knob is also
ornamented by two crossed lines dividing the top into four triangular
spaces, the opposing two of which are shaded ; the other two triangles
are plain.

P17. Elaborately-ornamented fragment of large bowl. Max. ext. diam.
of rim 8.38 in.
Ware heavy ; thickness varies from 0.38 in. to 0.5 in. Paste of greyish
colour near middle of section, brownish near the surfaces ; mixed with
quantity of fine quartz grains. Ext. surface black and burnished. Int.
surface black, brownish near the margin of lip. Ornamented with cordons
and girth grooves, a line of small round punctured holes below the lip,
and two bands of dot-and-circle pattern between the cordons. The cordons
are ornamented with chevrons, and the upper surface of the lip with double
chevrons bordered on the Int. surface by two shallow girth grooves.
Found in Mound X, on the clay floor, 7.5 ft. N.E. of the c.p., 1912. Figured

P18. Ornamented base and fragment of side attached. The base has
two round perforations 0.25 in. in diam. drilled after the pot was fired.
Max. diam. of base 5.25 in.
Ware heavy, strong and hard-baked ; thickness varies from 0.25 in. to
0.38 in. Paste dark grey, mixed with large quantity of quartz (largest
pieces 0.l26 in. in diam.) and some grains of black stone. Ext. surface
black to buff, smooth where not weathered gritty to the touch elsewhere.
mt. surface black, smooth in places, gritty elsewhere. Base ornamented
with double-grooved inverted semicircies, the spaces between shaded with
curved grooves. Fragment of side shows two girth grooves.
Found in Mound XIV, on first floor, 23 ft. N.E. of the c.p., 1912. Figured
in Plate V.
P19. About two-thirds of an ornamented bowl. Type III.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 6 in. ; max. ext. diam. of body 7.56 in. max. ext.
diam. of base 4.063 in.
Paste mixed with sand and small quartz grains. Ext. surface black, smooth
and burnished. Int. surface brown, gritty to the touch. Ornamented with
a festooned pattern shaded with fine cross-hatching, bordered above by
three
shaded girth grooves. Two girth grooves surround the base. The rim is
surrounded with a girth groove on the inner surface. The under-surface
of the base is ornamented, but there is not enough of the pattern to describe
the complete design.
Found in Mound XIV, 22.5 ft. N. F. of the c.p., 1912. Figured in Plate

P20. Fragment of ornamented bowl. Type XXVII.
Ware hard-baked, heavy ; varies in thickness from 0.l9 in. to 0.34 in.
Paste light brown colour, mixed with quantity of grit. Ext. surface brown,
one place black and burnished, weathered and gritty to the touch ; shows
horizontal tool-marks. Int. surface greyish-brown colour, uneven and gritty
to the touch. Ornamented with an elaborate design of the scroll pattern
on lower part of body, and between this and the rim by two cordons and
rows of 0.5 in. circles enclosing two smaller circles with dots. The lower
cordon is bordered below by a line of punctured dots. The rim is nearly
vertical on out-side and convex on inner surface ; the lip is everted.
Found in Mound III, in the black earth, 35! ft. SW. of the c.p., 1913.

P21. Fragment of ornamented bowl ; max. ext. diam. of lip 4.75
in.
Ware badly-baked, heavy ; average thickness 0.38 in. Paste rather soft,
light grey colour, mixed with large quantity of quartz, and pieces of
stone, some of which are 0.l9 in. in diam. Ext. surface lightish-grey,
originally black and burnished ; smooth where not weathered. Int. surface
grey to red ; this surface appears harder-baked than the exterior, uneven,
gritty to the touch. Ornamented with a band of chevron pointing to the
right ; 0.62 in. max. width. Band is bordered above and below by four
girth grooves the middle space between these lines is ornamented with
a single row of dots.
