Detailed description of the Pottery

P 6. Fragment of lower part of a pot with flat pedestalled
foot, perforated with four round holes 0.l9 in. in diam. made after baking,
two of which were drilled through the edge of the foot. When complete
the base was probably perforated with six holes.
Max. ext. diam. of base 3 in.
Ware is strong, hard baked and heavy; thickness varies from 0.19 in. to
0.3l in.
Paste dark grey, mixed with quantities of fine quartz sand. Ext. surface
black and burnished, smooth, where not weathered. mt. surface dark grey
and gritty to the touch, the perforated part being concave.
Found in Mound II, on the clay floor, 18 ft. S.S.E. of the c.p., 1910.

P 7. Fragment of pot with vertically-placed countersunk
eyelet handle.
The perforation is nearly round, and measures 0~5 in. in diam. Width of
lug 0~88 in.
Ware hard-baked, very heavy ; thickness varies from 0~38 in. to 0~5 in.
Paste grey-coloured. mixed with large quantity of fine rounded water-worn
grit, also calcite and shell. Ext. surface dark grey, nearly black, smooth.
mt. surface nearly black, smooth, pitted with small holes, which probably
contained lime or some material that has been dissolved.
Found in Mound VII, in the black earth, 16.5 ft. W.N.W. of the c.p., 1910.

P 10. Small pot, rough and clumsily-made.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 3~38 in. ; max. diam. of base 2~88 in. max. height
2 in.
Ware coarse, hard-baked, and very heavy ; average thickness of side 0~38
in.
Paste dark grey colour, mixed with pieces of stone and quartz sand. Ext.
surface black where not weathered ; grey elsewhere, uneven and dented.
mt. surface brownish-buff, smooth and even, semicircular when looked at
in section.
Found in Mound VII among the brushwood in the foundation, near the S.
margin, 20 ft. S. of c.p., 1910.

P 11. About one-half of a small roughly-made plain pot (restored).
Max. ext. diam. of lip 4.5 in. ; max. ext. diam. of base 3~88 in. ; max.
height 5~l26 in.
Ware clumsy and heavy ; thickness varies from 0~38 in. to 0~5 in.
Paste mixed with grit and large quantity of limestone. Ext. surface grey
to dark brown, uneven, fairly smooth, pitted with
small holes. mt. surface light brownish-grey, fairly smooth, pitted with
many small holes.
Found in Mound VII, 1908.

P 12. Nearly complete pot found in fragments, Type XV.6
Height 4 in. ; max. ext. diam. of rim 5.75 in. max ext. diam. of body
6 in max ext. diam. of base 5.38 in.
Ware hard-baked and heavy ; thickness varies from 0.l26 in. to 0.3l in.
Paste dark grey, mixed with grit. Ext. surface black, smooth and burnished,
shows tool-marks, chiefly horizontal ; weathered at places. mt. surface
reddish-black, uneven, gritty to the touch ; horizontal tool-marks near
the rim. Ornamented with a band of chevron pattern l.75 in. in depth,
bordered above and below by three girth grooves, shaded diagonally. The
chevrons contain leaf-shaped spaces shaded with cross hatching ; bordered
below by double festooned lines.
Found in Mound VII, first floor, 14.5 ft. 5.5W. of the c.p., 1908.

6 As the Glastonbury and Meare Lake Villages
are of the same date, the numbers, i.e. xxv to xxxviii, attached to
type pots found at Meare are made continuous with those classified in
the Glastonbury Lake Village monograph.
