Detailed description of the Pottery p22

P 1. Small, plain, coarse, clumsily-made pot with distinct shoulder, which at one part is angular. Rim incomplete.
Present height 2.94 in. ; Max. exterior diameter of shoulder 3.75 in. diameter of hase varies from 2.38 in. to 2.62 in.
Ware badly baked, heavy, thickness varies from 0.38 in. to 0.4l6 in.
Paste dark grey, made of inferior clay, imperfectly mixed with grit and small stones. Exterior surface dark grey to brown, smooth, uneven, scored with fine vertical lines or grooves, possibly tool-marks, pitted with small irregular holes. Interior surface dark grey to light brown, uneven, rough, pitted with small boles.
Found in Mound II, 35.25 ft. S.S.W. of the c.p.5, 1910.

P 2. Fragment of large ornamented bowl with round everted bead rim.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 7.44 in. ; max. ext. diam. of body 9.62 in.
Ware hard baked, varies from 0.25 in. to 0.38 in. in thickness.
Paste dark grey of heavyweight ; clay mixed with quartz grains. Ornamented below the rim with two bands, 0.5 in. wide, containing a single row of dot-and-circle pattern. The bands are bordered by a raised cordon ornamented with chevrons pointing to the left. Four fragments of this bowl were found ; two are of a brown colour due to secondary firing after the pot was broken. The paste of the fourth fragment is of a light grey colour.

P 3. Fragment of base of vessel perforated with one central hole drilled after baking.
Ext. diam. of base 3.25 in.
Ware hard baked, strong, heavy, average thickness 0.25 in.
Paste dark grey mixed with quantity of fine grit. Ext. surface dark grey and gritty to the touch. Int. surface black, fairly smooth, uneven.

P 4. Pedestalled base of a pot, with omphaloid depression, which has been purposely perforated.
The foot is 0.75 in. in depth, slightly everted, and has a max. ext. diam. of 3 in.
The omphaloid depression is 1.063 in. in diam. Perforation 0.88 in. in diam.
Ware hard baked, heavy and gritty to the touch. Paste varies from grey to light red ; clay mixed with large quantity of grit, chiefly water-worn quartz grains. Ext. surface varies from dark grey to red, smooth but gritty. Tnt. surface nearly black at places, smooth but gritty.

P 5. Plain pigmy pot with slightly concave base.
Max. ext. diam. of rim 2 in. ; max. ext. diam. of base 1.75 in. ; max. height 1.33 in. ; max.int. depth 1.19 in.
Ware hard baked, averag~ thickness 0.l9 in.
Paste brownish-grey, mixed with pieces of limestone. Ext. surface brown-grey, uneven, flecked with white spots. Int. surface brown-grey, fairly smooth, uneven, flecked with white spots.
Found in Mound VII in the black earth under the clay, 14 ft. W.S.W. of the c.p., 1910.
