| As the ice retreated from Britain, modern man slowly came north following the animals that he hunted. The land was covered in birch and pine forests. As his tools improved, the standard of living got better. * By the Mesolithic period, semi-permanent houses were built, and boats were used for transport and fishing. Flint tools had handles. Clothes were more than skins just wrapped round the body, and shoes were being made. * By the Neolithic, there was pottery, gold jewellery and the start of farming. Large earthworks were built, such as Avebury in Wiltshire. Family tombs called long barrow were built. * By the Bronze age, people were buried in individual graves and Stonehenge was started. By 1,000 BC, there was a large expansion in the use of iron throughout Europe. | Click here for Monarchs of England Details from 410 AD to present day.
