Ice Age
Down with a chill

As the glaciers retreat.....

The last Ice Age to affect Britain ended about 10,000 years ago. The ice had covered Britain as far south as Wales and the Midlands, with the south of England left frozen and bare. Temperatures averaged -8ºC. Because of all the water locked up in the ice, the sea level was so low that there was dry land between Britain and France. As the ice caps melted and the southern edge of the ice moved North, the land thawed and life recovered. As the vegetation took hold, animals from Europe moved in to exploit the new food source. Man slowly followed, returning to areas that had been occupied before the last ice expansion. Trees began to establish themselves beginning with birch and pine. The first animals were horse, reindeer, wolf, arctic fox and bear.
