The Gods

I don't beli-eve it!

The Celtic peoples had many Gods, in keeping with the majority of the ancient world. In the archaeology there is evidence of over 360 names of Gods across the Celtic world, but only around 20 occur more than once.

The Gods tended to be very local with personal names to suit the location and the people who lived in the area. They existed side by side with people and were very real. It was not a case of the Gods being worshipped, so much as that they were there, and had to be respected and honoured. If you required a favour you would ask the Gods to help, and in return would make promises or offerings to keep them happy.

Take great care not to muddle the Irish Myths of the 6th century with the beliefs of the pre-Roman British people!

Here are a few of the names of the Gods, and their powers.
This is only a small list! (Still compiling it!)

Belief in the afterlife was very strong, and amongst the warrior class there was a head cult. It was believed that the spirit resided in the head, so, be capturing your enemies head, you capture the spirit. Some of the warriors had no fear of death, believing that as you die you walk straight through the veil - into the afterlife
