The Association for Portland Archaeology is a voluntary body that was set up during the excavation of the Culverwell Mesolithic site. It promotes and encourages an interest in the local history and archaeology of all periods of the Isle of Portland as well as the conservation and preservation of our heritage and ancient environment. The Association undertakes archaeological research and also investigates potential archaeological remains on the island. Its members are there to help the public with any query regarding the past. We do lectures, guided archaeology and history walks and have regular workshops. We publish a newsletter. The Association acts as caretaker of the Culverwell Mesolithic site and during the summer months various heritage projects are held on site, such as the building of prehistoric style huts. The site is open at weekends in the Summer months and at any other time by contacting Susann Palmer (see below). We cater for people of all abilities and there is no need to be an archaeologist or to do excavation work in order to be a member. Family membership is particularly welcome.
