6. Arrival of the Solar Boat

Tomb of Horemheb (XVIII Dynasty). General under Akhnaton and Tutankhamen, later Viceroy of Egypt.
Upper scene represents the solar barque (boat) traversing the sky through one of night's divisions; the heavens being concieved as an ocean. The solar barque is drawn by four servants, assisted by the gods appointed to this division to guard the ram-headed god Khnem, identified with Amen. The lower scene represents the power of darkness, both with arms shackled, and smitten to the ground. In front of these enemies of the sun god, is the god who checks their attacks. The texts, describing divisions of the night, read "This great god who traverses (the water) in the underworld and his barque is drawn by the gods living in the underworld."
