2. Start of the Journey

Tomb of Seti I, Son of Rameses I.
He constructed the most wonderful of all the palatial buildings in Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia, amongst which is the Great Hall of Columns at Karnak. Constructed also the most imposing of the rock tombs. The tall black figure with white eyes (left of picture) represents the shade or shadow of the King, to be united to him that he may be complete in his new life. Upper part represents life in the hidden land beyond this world, called by the ancients, "The Duat". A Solar Barque is shown crossing the divisions of the underworld, the god Khnem standing within the shrine, with a cobra frieze to protect the solar barque from harmful agencies, and drawn by four servants through this division, some of the denizens of which are shown in the lower scenes.
